When do the financial obligations of the sponsor end?

The obligations end when the applicant either:

  • Obtains 40 quarters of qualifying social security quarters; or
  • Becomes a U.S. citizen; or
  • Leaves the United States and is no longer a lawful permanent resident; or
  • Obtains a new adjustment of status based on a different affidavit of support while a subject to removal; or
  • Dies

Separation, divorce, leaving the household do not mean the end of the obligations of the sponsor.
