What is a checklist letter?

It is a letter sent by the National Visa Center (NVC) stating that the affidavit of support provided by the sponsor contains critical errors and omissions.

It also a letter sent by the NVC, but  stating that the affidavit of support provided by the sponsor contains non-critical errors and omissions.

What does the NVC expect after sending an checklist letter?

That the sponsors submits a new affidavit of support to the NVC.  Without it, the application cannot go forward.

What does the NVC expect after sending an assessment letter?

That the applicant brings a new affidavit of support at the time of the interview.  To that effect, the NVC will transfer the green card application to the consulate or embassy where the interview will take place.

Can both a checklist and an assessment letter be received around the same time?

Yes, according to oral statements made by U.S. government officials, this is a possibility.  In that instance, the sponsor needs to submit a new affidavit of support to the NVC dealing with the critical errors or omissions.
